Sally fully expected to reach 93, as had her mother and her mother's mother. She had many plans for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had many stories and much love to share for many years to come. My sadness at losing her is that I will miss so much of that. But my joy and consolation is that she claimed the blood of Christ and accepted His salvation just a few weeks before she was diagnosed as terminal. She shared that with her family over our Thanksgiving dinner. We were studying together every Tuesday in John and in Proverbs and coming to terms with the bright future that is now hers, but which was so hard to see through the tears of parting.
One of her requests was that I sing Deep River while her ashes were
scattered at Pemaquid Point Light. I was honored to do so on a bright and
beautiful day in June. As a contrast, I also sang the happy spiritual
'I'll Fly Away', which I sang at her memorial service in January. I am
still, in May, 2002, very much missing my mother. Especially on a day like
today when I need so badly to talk to her.

DEEP RIVER - Classic American Spiritual Song - Anonymous, Public Domain
Deep river,
My home is over Jordan.
Deep river, Lord,
I want to cross over into campground.
O don't you want to go
To that gospel feast,
That promised land
Where all is peace?
O don't you want to go
To that promised land,
That land where all is peace?
Deep river,
My home is over Jordan.
Deep river, Lord,
I want to cross over into campground.
