Maine is full of contrasts... ocean and mountain, forest and desert, rushing rivers and still lakes, work and pleasure. This last may be the most pronounced of our dichotomies. Though Maine sells itself as "Vacationland", this state is home to some of the hardest working people I have ever met. Lobstermen and Lumbermen, millworkers and seamstresses, so many who work so hard for so little. Life has never been easy, here, but Mainers have always proved tougher than their circumstances.
